One of the cool new features of SSBB is the ability to take snapshots of the screen in just about any mode you want, including Special Brawl modes. You can save any snapshot you've taken either directly to your Wii, or to an SD card. Obviously, to get the snapshots to your PC, you'll need an SD card and some kind of SD card reader. SD cards themselves are pretty darn cheap... I've seen 2GB cards sold for $20 or less. Readers can either be stand-alone SD-to-USB readers or part of a multi-card reader. Again, I've seen these things sold for very low prices. Some computers even come with built-in SD card readers nowadays.
Don't let Nintendo sweet-talk you into buying an officially Wii-branded SD card. ANY SD card you find in most electronics stores will do just fine. Super Smash Bros. Brawl only supports cards up to 2GB (even though the Wii can accept SDHC cards up to 32GB). Anything higher than that will not work, but don't sweat it too much. 2GB is far more than enough, in my opinion. In fact, you could probably find other uses for a card that size, such as using it in a digital camera.
So how do you take snapshots? It's simple. When you pause the game, look at the bottom of the screen. The button you have to press depends on the controller you use (Wii Remote only, Wii Remote with Nunchuk, Classic Controller, or GameCube controller). Once that button is pressed, the shot is instantly taken and you are given a choice of saving the shot to either your Wii console or, if one is plugged in, your SD card. You can use the Album feature under Vault to manage all the shots you've taken.
Now for converting your snapshots into a format that your computer can read.
The original files are in BIN format and the guide below will tell you how they
can be converted to JPG.
1. Head to the
Brawl Snapshot
Decrypter, which will convert your original .bin files straight from your
web browser!
2. Click Choose..., then select the bin file and click OK. On the SD card, the shots are located in the following folder structures:
/private/wii/app/RSBE/al (U.S. version)
/private/wii/app/RSBJ/al (Japanese version)
/private/wii/app/RSBP/al (PAL version)
3. If you took the picture while playing in 16:9 wide screen, be sure to check 16:9 Widescreen. Now click Decrypt. Right-click the resulting image to save it anywhere on your PC.
And you're done!
